Things

On eBay if I look at an item I also tend to look at what other items the seller has for sale. After scrolling down their other items, it often becomes apparent they are disposing of an estate, someones entire set of belongings. We might like to think someone has just had a clear-out, but often you can see they are once treasured possessions: best cutlery, souvenirs from places visited, same sized shoes, clothes all the same size, vintage lingerie, special occasion clothes, personal items, and so on. I think about how not very long ago, someone cared about these items, would clean them, dust them, wash them, and they would protect them as their treasured possessions. But now they are gone these items mean nothing to anyone else, other than their monetary value, only to be cheaply sold off on eBay.

It makes you realise, life isn't about 'things', it is not about possessions, designer labels, assets, investments or property, you can't take any of them with you. Like our bodies, when we die we shed all the material things we thought so important during our lives, they are simply discarded. What really matters is the experience of our journey through life. Were we kind to others? Did we show empathy for those in less fortunate circumstances? Did we treat others equally and with respect, regardless of their race, religion, sex or income? Did we give our love to others, try to make their lives better, nurture them, and do things for them without expecting anything in return?

Or did we see everyone else as what value they are to us? If not now, one day ('networking')? What can we get out of them? What can we get them to pay for? Who can we get to through them? What we can get them to do for us? And if the answers are no, no, no, no and no, they then are of no use to us and we simply discard them? Ignore them? Don't reply to their txts? or emails? Or make any effort to see them?

It is your choice whether your spirit lives in the light or in the darkness.
